Frequently Asked Questions
How does this payroll hours calculator handle overnight shifts?
If your end time is earlier than your start time — for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM — the calculator automatically treats the end time as the next day, so your hours are counted correctly.
How are overtime hours and overtime pay calculated?
By default the tool follows the US FLSA rule: any weekly hours over 40 are counted as overtime and paid at 1.5× your hourly rate. You can change the weekly threshold and the multiplier to match your employer's policy.
Are my clock-in times and pay data stored or uploaded?
No. Every calculation happens locally in your own browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or shared — there is no account and no sign-up. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Calculation Formula
The calculator uses these formulas to turn your times into hours and pay.
Daily hours
For each day, the tool converts your clock-in and clock-out times into minutes, subtracts any unpaid break, and divides by 60:
Daily hours = (End time − Start time − Break minutes) ÷ 60
If your end time is earlier than your start time (an overnight shift), 24 hours are added automatically. If only one time is entered or the break is longer than the shift, the day counts as 0 hours.
Total weekly hours
The daily hours from Monday through Sunday are added together:
Total hours = Daily hours (Mon + Tue + Wed + Thu + Fri + Sat + Sun)
Overtime hours
By default, any weekly hours above 40 count as overtime (you can change the threshold and multiplier):
Overtime hours = max(0, Total hours − Overtime threshold)
Regular hours = Total hours − Overtime hours
Gross pay
Regular and overtime pay are calculated separately, then added together:
Regular pay = Regular hours × Hourly rate
Overtime pay = Overtime hours × Hourly rate × Overtime multiplier
Gross pay = Regular pay + Overtime pay
